ADOPTED: Election census LOWERED to three percent, TWO out of five candidates are women

MPs of the Serbian Assembly adopted amendments to the Law on the Election of Members of Parliament and amendment to the Law on Local Elections, which lower the election census and stipulate that at least 40 percent of women are on the election lists. Amendments proposed by the Serbian Progressive Party reduce the election census from five to three percent, and they also introduce more concrete rules for the participation of national minority parties in elections. Amendments to the Law on Election of Members of the Parliament and amendments to the Law on Local Elections, proposed by the MP of the Democratic Party Gordana Comic, were adopted as well, stipulating that electoral lists include at least 40 percent of women. MPs adopted the amendment by the MP of the Serbian Progressive Party Marija Obradovic to amendments of the law submitted by MP Comic, stipulating that two out of every five candidates on the lists must be women. During discussion, MPs reiterated several times that lower census would contribute to higher representation of the parliament composition, and said that proposals by MP Comic represent an example how dialogue can be conducted on the topic important to both the Government and the opposition. The law will enter into force in less than eight days after its publication. Parliamentary elections, as previously announced by the Advisor to the Serbian President, Nikola Selakovic, will be held on April 26th.
