Archaeologists discovered medieval church in the heart of Sumadija, bigger than Gracanica

A monumental building larger than Gracanica, which is supposed to be a medieval church belonging to the Nemanjic dynasty, was discovered by a team of archaeologists at the Dvorine site, near Arandjelovac, said curator of the National Museum of Arandjelovac, Vladan Milivojevic. A team of archaeologists searched for the remnants of the house of the last Serbian despot Pavle Bakic, but the ashlar they discovered with the remnants of frescoes eliminated any doubt that it was a church. Milivojevic says that this is the most significant discovery of medieval archeology in our country in the past few decades. „It is a medieval church that is 27 meters long and 14 meters wide, decorated with paintings by great masters, which makes it one of the greatest in that era. There is no written trace of that church, which makes our discovery even more valuable,“ Milojevic said. He added that the team of archaeologists at the Dvorine site in the heart of Sumadija was led by Dejan Radicevic from the Department of Archeology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. Milojevic said that fragments in rubble with saints’ images were found on the site. „That leads us to the assumption that the endowment of such dimensions could only be ruler’s and that it belonged to the Nemanjic dynasty. We also assume that the church was built by Tsar Dusan in the middle of the 14th century, at the time of the greatest prosperity during his rule“, said Milivojevic. For him, there is no doubt that rich population lived in the Middle Ages on the site he is exploring. „Massive tombstones testify to that. We will continue to explore the entire site and I believe that we will come across other exciting testimonies to the way of life in the Middle Ages in Sumadija,“ said Milivojevic.
