Architect about floods: For city officials, Belgrade is INSOLUBLE city

Architect Dragoljub Bakic has said that floods occur in Belgrade every year because the city government does not work on the sewerage infrastructure, which cannot withstand the accelerated unplanned construction throughout the city. Due to heavy raining on Monday, parts of Belgrade were flooded. „For the current Belgrade administration, Belgrade is an insoluble city. They simply do not know how to solve infrastructural problems, nor do they want to. They are not interested in that because it is expenditure, and not revenue, such as construction. They do not want to have expenditures, but only profit,“ Bakic told the Beta agency. Bakic said that the city government was not working on capital infrastructure projects, and that that issue would again be pushed aside due to the epidemic and the economic problems caused by it. „Once again, all these communal issues would be put aside and we would continue to wade through water in the streets,“ he expects. Bakic emphasized that no one took care of the infrastructure, even though it was at least 40 years old, and that the government did not implement the General Zoning Plan. „You cannot build thousands of square meters above the ground and do nothing underground. The general zoning plan says that construction should take place in the direction of Avala and Grocka, and that the city should be expanding there – not everyone can live in Vracar and Boulevard,“ said Bakic. He added that water had nowhere to go, which was why it was flooding streets due to „semilegal construction, building houses and paving“, manholes that were not cleaned and the sewerage network that was not expanding.
