Authorities in Bor file criminal complaint against Zijin

The town administration of Bor has filed a criminal complaint against the responsible officials of the Chinese company Zijin for the excessive multi-day pollution with sulphur dioxide and other substances harmful to the health of the population.

As it was confirmed for the website istmedia.rs by the Municipal Public Prosecutor’s Office, the complaint was signed by Mayor of Bor, Aleksandar Milikic, and it refers to the responsible officials of the Bor copper smelting complex, which operates within Zijin.

Measuring stations of the Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) have been recording excessive sulphur dioxide (SO2) pollution in Bor’s town park for three days now, and pollution has been repeated almost every day for almost two years since Serbia sold RTB Bor to strategic partner Zijin and became a co-owner of the minority share of 37 percent.

The legally allowed values of SO2 are 350 micrograms per cubic meter, and on Monday the average values up to 1,969 micrograms were measured several times during the day, i.e. it was specified that the air was „heavily polluted“ and that it was not recommended for people to leave their apartments.

According to public data, the air at the same location is also „heavily polluted“ with PM10 particles.

Measuring stations in Bor record average pollution every hour, but the current pollution peaks are estimated to be much higher.
