Belgrade to receive two more means of PUBLIC TRANSPORT – to work via SAVA and DANUBE rivers, but not via electric scooter

It appears that residents of the Serbian capital will receive two new means of transport in the following period. One is bicycle and the other is river transport. The cornerstone for introduction of public bicycles and public river transport was laid, so to speak, this week, at the meeting of the City Assembly, when majority of members voted for proposed project of public-private partnership, for the introduction of a public bicycle system in Belgrade. „Belgrade is one of rare cities that does not have public bicycles, and the project foresees 100 bicycle parking stations,“ Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesic said at that meeting, emphasizing that there is currently around 100 kilometres of bicycle tracks, and the plan is to build additional 20 kilometres. The company that enters in public-private partnership with the City of Belgrade will receive a 75-percent ownership stake, while bicycles will be both regular and electric. On the other hand, more and more popular transportation device in the Serbian capital – electric scooters for now are not foreseen as part of the system of public bicycle transport because, as Vesic says, for now there is no legal regulative for this means of transport in Serbia. „As a city we are organized to prioritize pedestrian zones, i.e. pedestrians and cyclists, since that is an achievement on the level of entire civilization“. He pointed out that amendment of the Decision on Public Parking Areas will mark supply locations at outskirts of pedestrian zones, and they will be protected by submersible bollards, while entry and exit control will be conducted electronically. Another major novelty in Belgrade’s public transport should be „opening of river traffic, since there are parts of the city that can be connected that way“.
