BIZLife „30 under 30“ list: Dunja Matic, Sales Director, Hilton

Dunja spent most of her life in the United States, where she finished elementary and high school, as well as faculty. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Hotel Industry and Tourism Management. Then she decided to leave the country in which she spent more than 20 years and came to Serbia alone to fulfil her dream of living and working in Belgrade.

During her 12 years of vocational service she has so far worked in seven hotels in several countries, including the United States, Great Britain and Serbia. She began her career in 2008, when she was still in faculty, as a receptionist at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Boston. She spent four years there and gained lots of experience in various segments of this industry. She left Boston for six months in order to complete sales and marketing internship at the prestigious Langham London Hotel. After her internship, Dunja returned to Boston and completed managerial training at the Le Meridien Hotel. From 2012 to 2015, she worked as a sales manager at two Boston hotels – Boston Marriott Newton and Hyatt Regency Cambridge.

With the desire to apply and improve her experience and knowledge in Serbia, Dunja decided to apply at the Marriott hotel for the position of sales director and soon after she moved to Belgrade. Together with her colleagues, she opened the first hotel of this global company in Serbia. Seeking a new challenge, she accepted an invitation to join Hilton’s team in Belgrade as a sales director. She is currently working in this high-ranking downtown hotel, which has 242 rooms, a spa centre, three restaurants and 11 conference and event halls.

Why did you decide to come to Serbia?

I lived in the United States and I really liked coming here. I think that as a nation we are smart, hardworking and you can by all means live and work here. I did it mostly for myself, and partly because I wanted to prove people that one can build a career here and that a person can be successful wherever he wants, with perseverance, hard work and effort.

What did you want to be when you were little?

A detective. I was constantly reading Agatha Christie’s books. „Ten Little Indians“ is my favourite.

    Favourite school subject?

Geography and languages, I studied French and Spanish. In America we unfortunately had only one year of geography, thus I loved exploring maps on my own.

    Business role model?

There is no person I would single out as my role model. I generally admire people who have gone through various stages and positions to reach their biggest career ups and those who are not afraid to take a risk.
