BIZLife “30 under 30”: Strahinja and Uros Margan, entrepreneurs, “Margan PLUS”
Strahinja Margan was born in 1992 in Belgrade. An economist by profession, he is the co-owner and manager in the family distillery “Margan PLUS”, the producer of “Banatski kalvados” brandy, which for several years has been listed both country and the region as one of the top quality brands in this category of spirits. Uros Margan was born in 1995 in Belgrade. He is a student of agricultural economics, co-owner and brand manager at “Margan PLUS”. “Margan PLUS” is a small family-run distillery from South Banat, fifteen kilometres away from Belgrade. “Banatski kalvados” stands out among their assortment of several types of top quality fruit brandies in recent years as one of the highest quality spirits in both country and the region. It is a calvados-type brandy, made from domestic varieties of apples of the highest quality, using a specific procedure, which has aged for several years in oak barrique. The quality of the “Banatski kalvados” has been recognized in recent years at numerous domestic and European competitions and fairs in Prague, Bratislava, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Novi Sad and Belgrade, where it has won gold and silver medals. In 2018, the Margan brothers won the award for best your managers in Southeast Europe at the International Agribusiness Summit in Vrnjacka Banja.
Is there anything you had to renounce in order to get to where you are now? We have been taught from a young age that business must be approached as seriously and as professionally as possible. We definitely gave up our free time, which we invested in business.
Did success reach you, or was it the other way round? We believe that a person must take the initial step towards the achievement of a certain goal. That way, he increases his chances of success finding him.
What is the most important lesson you have learned in your work so far? Young people should go through all phases of a business, from the most basic to the most complex. That way one will gain complete insight and knowledge about a certain business. Concretely, in this business of ours, we have learned everything – from production to marketing and promotion of our assortment. We would also like to emphasize that it is important to be open and ready for criticism and advice from experienced people, and preparedness for continuous learning is necessary as well.
What is the ultimate goal? Our goal is to become one of the leading brandy producers in both country and the region in the coming years. The ultimate goal does not exist, because we strive for constant progress – there are no limits!
Favourite school subject? Strahinja: Marketing. Uros: Sociology.
First job? Strahinja and Uros: Sale of automobile parts in the family company “Auto-oprema”, founded by our father and grandfather.
Business role model? Strahinja: Jack Ma. Uros: Elon Musk.
