Djerdap on the UNESCO world list of geoparks
The Djerdap area on the Danube River, by the decision of the Executive Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO, has been listed on the UNESCO Global Geoparks as the first geopark in Serbia, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has announced. Geoparks are unique, unified geographical distinguished by sites and landscapes of international geological significance and exceptional natural and cultural heritage. The Djerdap Geopark spreads across 1,330 square kilometres, „encompassing extraordinary sites and phenomena of geological character,“ the statement said. More than 100-kilometre long Djerdap Gorge is the longest gorge in Europe. With the expansion of the UNESCO list to additional 15 geoparks, 161 areas of exceptional international geological importance across 44 countries are now included in the global network.
