Yandex launched a Yandex Map editor in Serbian. With it, users from Serbia can create and improve city maps together with the Yandex team. Good quality maps will help locals and tourists to better orientate themselves and find the correct routes more quickly.
Everyone can edit maps – no special expertise is needed. The service is based on satellite images, on which objects can be marked: streets and squares, buildings and entrances, stores, traffic lights and road cameras. Company owners can add their companies’ addresses and working hours, and these data will be made available to everyone using Yandex for iOS and Android following a crosscheck. It will be easier for people to find an address or a newly opened coffeehouse, to plan a driving or a walking route.
“Yandex Maps for smartphones help people in finding places and addresses – they are widely used in Russia, post-Soviet states and Turkey. It will now be making an appearance in Serbia as well. We are translating the app into Serbian, and our cartographers are updating the maps together with our users,” says Andrei Strelkov, the Head of Geoinformational Services at Yandex.
Yandex and the Kragujevac City Council have already launched a pilot project which aims to update the Kragujevac map. Also, meetings were held in several cities in Serbia where Yandex experts trained students to use the editor.
Yandex is the leading Russian internet company, owning the most popular search engine and website in the country. Maps, navigator, transport and other city and transport services that Yandex provides are used by some 55 million people. Yandex Map editor was launched in 2010.
