Professor Dragana Cvetkovic Ilic from Nis has been elected a member of the board of the world’s most important mathematical association for linear algebra. This is the greatest commendation achieved by a Serbian mathematician in the field. Dragana Cvetkovic Ilic has done a lot of work and she has won some important awards. She was the best mathematician under the age of forty and she was the first recipient of the UNESCO Women in Science Award. She has been a member of the Linear Algebra Society based in the USA for over ten years, but the news that, by secret voting, she was elected a member of the board of directors still surprised her. “I can only say that it is a great pleasure and an honour to represent my country, my faculty and university,” said Prof Dragana Cvetkovic Ilic, PhD. She chose mathematics as a calling when she was in high school, which she completed as a talented student in three years, as well as the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Nis, where she works as a full-time professor. For 15 years she has also been teaching in the special department for gifted mathematicians in the Svetozar Markovic Secondary School in Nis. “The mathematical profession is popular today and mathematicians find jobs not only in schools but also in the economy, industry, on stock markets, in banks. Therefore, I suggest to anyone who loves mathematics to nourish that love, and to study this truly wonderful science,” said Cvetkovic Ilic.
