Famous square gets CULTURAL HERITAGE status

Terazije Square in Belgrade was granted the status of a cultural heritage, that is, of a spatial cultural and historical whole, at the proposal of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Belgrade, based on a decision of the Government of Serbia. The Institute stated in a press release that the formation of „Terazije“ began in the early 19th century at the request of Prince Milos. His urban policy explicitly required the expansion of the Town of Belgrade outside the trenches by forcibly relocating Serbian merchants from Savamala and by parcelling out the area extending from the former Stambol Gate at Trg Republike to present-day Slavija. Today, the area of Terazije plays the role of the main transit „square“ within which there are buildings of high national importance, residential buildings, cultural institutions, hotels, restaurants, public monuments and parks. Considering that it is related to Serbian rulers and the rulers of the Karadjordjevic and Obrenovic dynasties, significant individuals and historical events, as well as the fact that significant institutions were located within this area, it is important for the study of the social history of the Serbs, which is why it got the status of a cultural heritage.
