Farmers WARNED state: Without determined purchase prices, Serbia will STARVE

Due to negligence of state and authorities, Serbian agriculture is in a difficult position compared to the countries of the European Union, representatives of the Farmers’ Trade Union and Individual Agricultural Producers have stated. According to them, the biggest problems are low purchase prices of crops and seasonal fruits and vegetables, as well as small subsidies that state sets aside for agriculture. From the press conference that they held in front of the building of the Ministry of Agriculture, the representatives of Farmers’ Trade Union and Individual Agricultural Producers within „Sloga“ asked Minister Branislav Nedimovic to have a discussion with them in the next 48 hours. They demand for purchase prices of cherries, wheat, milk and other products to be determined, because they believe that prices currently offered by buyers are unacceptable. Dejan Bulatovic has said that the Ministry has not yet determined the purchase price of cherries, which was low, and for that reason producers threw them away because it was not profitable to pick them. „The purchase price of grain is noticeably low and milk is five times cheaper than oil, with a low price of cattle as well, thus cattle breeding is on the verge of existence,“ Bulatovic has estimated. The President of „Sloga“, Zeljko Veselinovic, said that „there will be a famine in Serbia“ if state does not guarantee the purchase price of grain, soy, wheat and other products to farmers. He said that farmers suffered major damage during the curfew, due to the ban on movement and closing of markets, and there were great losses of small producers to whom the Ministry of Agriculture did not offer any compensation.
