Female pensioners in Serbia are 23 percent „poorer“ than male pensioners

In 2019, women older than 65 received a pension in Serbia that was on average 22.8 percent lower than the pensions received by men.

Compared to 2013, this can be considered a certain progress, because in that year the difference in the amount of pensions was 28.5 percent in favor of men.

This figure deviates slightly from the average at the level of the European Union, where this gap is larger.

According to Eurostat’s data, women over the age of 65 in the EU received pensions in 2019 which were on average 29% lower than the pensions received by men.

In 2019, the share of pensioners over 65 at risk of poverty in the EU was 15.1 percent, slightly above the figure of 14.5 percent in 2018, as well as above the risk of poverty of the working age population (from 16 to 64 years of age) at 14.2 percent.

Contrary to the differences in the amount of pensions, the at-risk-of-poverty rate for pensioners has been growing gradually since 2014, when it was 12.3 percent.

Across the EU as a whole, between 2010 and 2019, the percentage of female pensioners over the age of 65 who were at risk of poverty was about three to four percentage points (pp) higher compared to male pensioners.

In 2019, the percentage of pensioners over the age of 65 who are considered to be at risk of poverty was between 10 and 30 percent in most EU member states.
