Half a million citizens LACK FINANCES even for BASIC needs

Ombudsman Zoran Pasalic has warned that, according to the survey results, about 500,000 citizens of Serbia cannot meet their basic existential needs, with those younger than 18 being at the highest risk of poverty. The Ombudsman said in a statement on the occasion of 20 February, World Day of Social Justice, that families with three or more children, the elderly, the sick and the unemployed in Serbia were often in a „particularly difficult position“. „Despite the austerity measures, the social policy measures must include further development of support to children, youth and the elderly, strengthening social and health care rights, investing in education and employment. It is important that we, as a society, encourage solidarity and responsibility for those who are the most vulnerable and who, without the help of the wider community, cannot solve their basic existential problems,“ the Ombudsman said. Based on the decision of the UN General Assembly, the World Day of Social Justice is celebrated on 20 February in order to especially highlight the global problems of poverty, social and economic exclusion and unemployment at the global population level.
