Kalemegdan on the list of the MOST VULNERABLE sites of cultural heritage in Europe

Belgrade Fortress is among 14 selected endangered sites of European cultural heritage, and the implementation of the damaging project of the construction of a Kalemegdan-Usce cable car would drastically threaten the integrity and authenticity of the site, which is not only a symbol of Belgrade, but a monument of exceptional importance to Serbia, said the expert panel of Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute. It is pointed out that „the Belgrade Fortress with its surroundings is a jewel of the cultural heritage of entire Europe, as it testifies to the numerous civilizations that have inhabited the Balkans from the Neolithic period to the present day, and it holds testimonies of the Celts, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, as well as Hungarian, Bulgarian and Serbian medieval states, including the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.“
