Law Faculty professor DISMISSED for PLAGIARIZING textbook

On Tuesday, the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade, dismissed full-time professor Aleksandar Jaksic for plagiarizing a textbook on International Private Law, and his employment will, as prescribed by the law, be terminated after eight days, on 13 February, reports the Vecernje Novosti daily. According to the newspaper, the University Ethics Committee confirmed last year the measure of public condemnation against professor Jaksic for plagiarizing a textbook on the subject of International Private Law, whereby the decision on the pronouncement of public condemnation became final. „It was then officially confirmed what was known at the Faculty of Law for a long time, that professor Jaksic plagiarized ‘his’ textbook. It was then decided to thoroughly examine the consequences of such public condemnation to the Faculty of Law,“ Zoran Mirkovic, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, told the Vecernje Novosti daily. According to the university rule books, the immediate consequence of public condemnation is the loss of the title of the person against whom the condemnation was issued, and the dean initiated such proceedings, the newspaper recalls, citing Mirkovic’s assessment that „the dismissal is not directly related to the pronouncement of the public condemnation“. „The reason for dismissal is the violation of the reputation of the Faculty of Law,“ Mirkovic said, noting that the decision which finally determined that Jaksic was a plagiarist „was read at the sessions of the Senate of the University and all scientific-educational councils of all the faculties and institutes within the University of Belgrade.“
