Majority of workers do NOT USE their break – they GIVE AWAY half a BILLION EUROS to employers

One third of workers in Serbia’s private sector do not use their break time during working hours, which is their legal right, while 69 percent of workers in that sector do not take full breaks, data of the „Pobuna Srbija“ organization shows. According to data of this organization published on their Instagram profile, by not using their break time, workers of Serbia’s private sector donate around EUR 448,000 to employers each workday. This was shown in the survey conducted on a sample of 4,250 employees in Belgrade, Nis, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Kraljevo, Cacak and Valjevo between April 8th and July 15th, 2019. According to results presented by „Pobuna Srbija“, the reason that prevents employees from using the break is insufficient number of employees who could replace them, too much workload and fear of being penalized by employer or direct manager. Over 80 percent of those who do not use the entire or break in general do not know how long the break lasts, adds this organization. Thus, construction workers who work 10 hours a day in 95 percent of cases think they are allowed a 30-minute break, and in fact the minimum is 45 minutes. The same is with drivers, traders, as well as production workers whom, in some companies, toilet break is being deducted from the overall break time.
