MANAGERS already offering workers: SERBS cooking in Croatia for EUR 5,000

Waiters and chefs from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Bulgaria, as well as from India and the Philippines will try to save Croatian tourism during this tourist season on the Adriatic Sea, as it has been struggling for years with seasonal workers. Predictions for this year’s season are not great, there are far fewer reservations than expected, by as much as 15 percent, but despite this the need for employment of foreigners is increasing, as large number of Croatians is going abroad to work. Restaurants along the Adriatic coast could close their doors without foreigners, thus everyone praise Serbs as excellent workers. „As of last season we have chefs from Serbia, who cook Dalmatian specialties without any problems, as if they were born here. They will work this year as well, and we are in negotiations with several excellent chefs,“ the new owner of several restaurants in Split says for the „Vecernje novosti“ daily, who pays chefs from Serbia from EUR 2,000 to EUR 5,000 a month. „Croatia for Serbs is what Ireland is for Croatians, as seasonal workers can indeed earn more than they would at home.“ We already have specialized agencies and managers who offer workers from Serbia to Croatian caterers. Thus, a presentation has also been held in Split recently, and a competition has been announced as well, on which 400 chefs and cooks from Serbia applied. Some of them have already got a job and started working on the Adriatic coast, and some will arrive at the beginning of June and will stay at the sea until the end of October. Salary is good, thus waiters can count on the starting salary of EUR 1,000, while chefs will all on call duties can earn much more. Most have been provided with accommodation and food during their stay on the Adriatic coast, and even though so far there have been cases of contract violation, everyone hopes this season will be more successful for seasonal workers as well.
