More and more Serbs want to be Bulgarians – students get EUR 120 a month

In order to gain numerous privileges granted by the Bulgarian citizenship in the European Union, more and more Serbian citizens are trying to obtain a Bulgarian passport. In search for a job and a more decent life in an EU country, the right to study for free and receive a scholarship in Bulgaria, medical treatment benefits and many other benefits offered by the paper that opens the door to the EU, people in southern Serbia are trying to „become“ Bulgarians. The interest in the passport of the neighbouring country, because it is far more attractive than the Serbian, is confirmed by Darko Anackov, President of the Bulgarian-Serbian Centre in Vranje, which has recently started offering consular services. According to Anackov, apart from those who are interested in obtaining the Bulgarian passport, there are also young people who want to study in Bulgaria for free. Free studies have recently been made possible. In addition to all the benefits, students receive a monthly scholarship in their first year of studies amounting to EUR 120. Citizens are interested in the Bulgarian passport because it gives them many benefits, and in terms of attractiveness it is far ahead of Serbian, says Anackov. The reason why people submit requests for the proof of Bulgarian citizenship is generally a better life in one of the countries of the European Union. The procedure differs from case to case and it can even take several years. According to the data of the Bulgarian-Serbian Centre in Vranje, there are currently about a dozen people interested in obtaining the Bulgarian passport.
