No plastic bags in Belgrade as of 2020

Judging by serious announcements by the Belgrade authorities, Belgrade will start implementing a historic decision from the New Year – banning the use of plastic bags in retail chains. This means that in less than five months, the citizens of Belgrade will go shopping equipped with their own bags because it will be impossible to even buy plastic bags. The heads of the Serbian capital recalled today that the City of Belgrade would ban the use of plastic bags from 1 January 2020, and that a decision on further elaboration of the ban would be adopted at a session of the Belgrade City Assembly, which would be held by the end of August. “More than a year ago, I announced at a meeting with the representatives of retail chains that from 2020 on the territory of the City of Belgrade, the use of plastic bags would not be allowed in retail facilities. In the meantime, retailers have started charging for plastic bags and this measure has reduced the use of plastic bags in Belgrade by about 60 percent,“ said Deputy Mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesic on his FB page. As a reminder, at the end of September last year, members of the Belgrade Assembly passed a decision banning plastic bags as of 2020.
