    OECD: Record low UNEMPLOYMENT

    Unemployment rates among the member states of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) dropped in August to their lowest level since 1998, according to the published data. 32.9 million people were unemployed in the OECD member states. The overall unemployment rate in the eurozone dropped to 7.4 percent, the same level as in April 2008. The most significant decrease was observed in Italy, by 0.3 percentage points, and in Portugal, by 0.2 percent. Outside Europe, unemployment was stable in Canada, where it reached 5.7 percent, and in Mexico, the United States and Japan, where it reached 3.5%, 3.7% and 2.2% respectively. In South Korea, it dropped by 0.9 percentage points to 3.1 percent. The latest September data show that the the unemployment rate in the USA dropped by 0.2 percentage points compared to August, to 3.5 percent, the lowest since December 1969. In August, the youth unemployment rate in the OECD area was the same as in the previous month, reaching 11.2 percent. In the eurozone, unemployment in the age group up to 24 years decreased by 0.2 percentage points, to 15.4 percent. In Greece, Italy and Spain it remained above 25 percent.
