Ombudsman DOES NOT WANT TO INVESTIGATE high MORTALITY of medical workers due to coronavirus

The Ombudsman has rejected the initiative of the Belgrade Center for Human Rights to, ex officio, in the control procedure, determine the reasons and possible omissions of the competent institutions due to which the mortality and morbidity of healthcare workers from covid-19 is increased in Serbia.

As stated in a press release, the ombudsman informed the Center in a letter that the conditions for initiating the procedure of controlling the work of administrative bodies were not met because the Center did not try to address the Ministry of Health and the Public Health Institute Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut before addressing the ombudsman.

The ombudsman believes that, according to the request for free access to information of public importance, they should have first requested information related to increased mortality and morbidity of healthcare workers from them.

„We note that the ombudsman has the authority to initiate the procedure of controlling the work of administrative bodies on his own initiative, based on the information obtained in any way, and to check whether systemic omissions have led to the violation of human rights,“ the statement says.
