Prices of clothes and shoes in Serbia as the ones in the EU, consumer technology THE MOST EXPENSIVE IN THE REGION

The prices of goods and services in Serbia are at 58 percent of the EU average, and with prices of clothes and shoes we are almost the same as other EU countries, but we have the most expensive consumer technology in the region, according to research by the European statistical office Eurostat.

Consumer technology (among the countries of the region) is the most expensive in Serbia (televisions, audio-visual devices, computers, and computer equipment), while prices in all countries except the North Macedonia above the EU average.

Consumer prices in Serbia are at the same level as those in Albania and slightly higher than in the rest of the region. In North Macedonia they are lower than the EU average by 50 percent, in Bosnia and Herzegovina by 45 percent and in Montenegro by 43 percent.

The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages in Serbia are at 80 percent of the EU average, alcohol and tobacco are at 62 percent, and prices of clothes and footwear are close to the EU average (around 93 percent).

Restaurants and hotels in the region are around 50 percent cheaper than the EU average, with the cheapest ones being in North Macedonia and Albania and the most expensive are in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In order to understand the extent of purchasing (in)ability in Serbia, one should bear in mind that the average salaries in the EU are several times higher than in our country. As an example, we can compare with Croatia, where average salaries reached EUR 950, while in our country they are around EUR 500. And yes, as a reminder, two days ago Croatia was declared the second poorest member of the EU in terms of per capita consumption in 2020.

As for electricity, gas and other types of fuel, prices in the region are roughly the same and 50 percent lower than the EU average.

The prices of communication services in Serbia are at 73 percent of the EU average, and in the region, they are more expensive only than North Macedonia.
