„Prices of fruit in Serbia are the HIGHEST in the last 15 years“

The Professor of Novi Sad  based Faculty of Agriculture, Zoran Keserovic, said that fruit in Serbia this year, apart from cherries, is the most expensive in the last 15 years, due to frosts in almost all European countries, but mostly in Eastern Europe. He stated with „Beta“ agency that the pandemic of the COVID-19 virus also had partial impact on the increase in price of fruit, because demand increased as well, due to content of vitamins recommended in fight against those infection. „Apricots were hit by frost across 85% of land in Serbia, only those in mountain regions survived as there was less frost, thus they cost between RSD 150 and RSD 200“, Keserovic said. He added that this fruit was sold at a price of RSD 45 to RSD 60 per kilogram last year, and apricots of low quality for production of spirits were sold at RSD 35, while this year the price is RSD 60. According to him, apples that are exported at EUR 0.73 per kilogram or around RSD 85 also have a high price. Strawberry producers earned up to EUR 25,000 per hectare this spring, depending on the yield. As he said, the most expensive is blueberry, as kilogram costs from three to four euros on the domestic market, and it is exported at an average price of EUR 5.5 to EUR 6.
