„Soothing“ words by the Secretary of State: Serbia has NO PROBLEM with doctors

At this moment Serbia has no problem with the number of doctors and with health care workers in general, according to the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health, Berislav Vekic. At the promotion of the European Training Centre for Vascular Aesthetics, Vekic pointed out that, according to data from 2018, between 750-900 doctors requested certification of their medical licence, which means that they intended to go abroad, to work or seek professional development. He added that in recent years there have been migrations of health personnel from the south and east of Europe to the west and there are estimates that between 500 to 600 doctors annually leave Serbia and go abroad. Vekic reiterated that Serbia has a sufficient number of doctors, because there are about 2,500 young doctors at the employment bureau, as well as a certain number of nurses. According to him, state has invested around RSD 10 billion in recent years for the purpose of modernization of health care, and better working conditions and higher salaries are a prerequisite for the stay of health workers in Serbia. He emphasized that 6,300 health workers were employed in Serbia last year alone, adding that they are working on reducing the number of non-medical staff in healthcare institutions to less than 20 percent of the total staff, through various forms of outsourcing i.e. hiring for specific jobs.
