„State of emergency, otherwise we will be in dire straits“

Epidemiologist Predrag Kon has told RTS TV that the medical part of the Crisis Staff proposed a state of emergency and the closure of everything except pharmacies, food stores and gas stations. He pointed out that the state of emergency had no alternative „otherwise we will be in dire straits“.

Predrag Kon said that the only measure that could produce result was the complete prevention of contacts.

„Such measures, which we had over the weekend, are not what the medical part of the Crisis Staff asked for, we demanded much stricter measures, to close everything except food stores, pharmacies and gas stations, in order to understand the situation, not only for the sake of understanding, but also to break the transmission chain,“ emphasized Kon.

He pointed out that the state of emergency had no alternative.

„The medical part of the Crisis Staff cannot propose any other measure, the whole weight of responsibility must be taken over by the whole society, the medical members clearly know that this measure is an economic blow, but regardless of that, it is a measure that protects lives, and we must say that openly and publicly. The proposal is that unprotected contacts must be banned, otherwise we will be in dire straits, and only then will it be clear what it means when the healthcare system collapses,“ said the epidemiologist for RTS TV.

The member of the Crisis Staff said that he had repeatedly emphasized that the significance of the state of emergency would be understood only in the upcoming period.

„The essence is that entire Europe did not understand it in the way it was necessary, there will be analysis, exchange of opinions, maybe it will look like bickering, but such re-examination is necessary, not for history but for acquiring knowledge on how to behave in similar situations in the future,“ says Kon.
