The deposit system is expensive and does not solve the problem of packaging waste

The Association for Packaging and Environmental Protection – SEPEN and Serbian Chamber of Commerce have organized a round table today called „Continuation of dialogue for better management of packaging and packaging waste in the Republic of Serbia“, with the aim of presenting the main conclusions of a recently completed study on packaging waste in Serbia.

It has been concluded at today’s meeting that it is necessary to improve the existing packaging waste management system in Serbia, via additional investment in the existing system of extended producers’ responsibility of around EUR 200 million in the next 10 years, which will ensure collection and recycling of around 64% of packaging waste (the current target in the EU is 65%).

An alternative possibility has also been discussed, in form of a of multi-material deposit system, for which implementation and functioning in Serbia we need to secure over EUR 1 billion in the next 10 years. A stake of packaging waste in total waste produced in Serbia is around 14%, of which only one part is the packaging that would be covered by the deposit collection system.
