    The polluted air in Serbia TAKES more than 6,000 lives a year

    More than 6,000 deaths a year are attributed to air pollution in Serbia, while nearly 2,000 citizens out of that number lose their lives in Belgrade, the „Politika“ daily received information from the World Health Organization. The air quality in the capital is mainly influenced by intense traffic, solid fuel heating and industry such as Obrenovac based power plant. According to the Environmental Protection Agency of the Republic of Serbia, during 2018 the level of air pollution placed Belgrade among the cities where the concentration of pollutants exceeds the recommended values several times, while Pancevo, Uzice, Kosjeric, Valjevo, Smederevo, Kraljevo, Kragujevac, Subotica, Sremska Mitrovica and Bor are jeopardized as well. The latest estimates of the World Health Organization (WHO) from 2016 show that air pollution is responsible for more than seven million premature deaths worldwide.
