The unemployment rate „jumped“ to 12.8%, 400,000 people in Serbia without a job

In the first quarter of 2021 there were 2.72 million employees in Serbia, while the number of unemployed almost reached a figure of 400,000.

The employment rate for that period was 46.3 percent, and the unemployment rate was 12.8 percent.

Practically, at the quarter-on-quarter level, the employment rate decreased by 1.3 percentage points, and the unemployment rate increased by 2.1 percentage points.

The Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia published in the statement for the first time the data based on a new methodology of the Labour Force Survey, which has been implemented since January 2021.

According to the announcement the most significant methodological change refers to the definition of employees, i.e., the exclusion of those persons who produce agricultural goods and services intended for personal consumption from the category of employees, i.e., who are not placing those products on the market.

According to the Labour Force Survey for the first quarter of 2021, and compared to the fourth quarter of 2020, the number of employed persons aged 15 and over decreased by 79,500 and the number of unemployed increased (by 64,200), as well as the population outside workforce by 7,700.

On a quarter-on-quarter level, the employment rate decreased by 1.3 percentage points, and the population rate outside the labour force increased by 0.2 percentage points, and in the first quarter of 2021 they amounted to 46.3 percent, and 46.9 percent, respectively.

At the same time, the unemployment rate rose by 2.1 percentage points and in the first quarter of 2021 amounted to 12.8 percent.

Total employment decreased by 79,500, primarily due to a decrease in the number of employees in the informal sector by 68,000.

The largest decline in employment was recorded in the sectors of agriculture, forestry and fishery, which is expected given the reduction in the volume of agricultural work in winter months, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia announced.

Employment is mostly reduced among people with secondary education and in the age group of 55 and older.
