„We do not need better SPOKESPERSONS“: Vucic GIVES MEDAL to Handke
President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has granted the Order of Karadjordje’s Star of the first degree to prominent Austrian writer Peter Handke.
„The Serbian people are happy to include Handke among their friends. Our people have never needed better spokespersons. Handke’s every word sounds thunderous. My peers got to know his work through Wim Wenders’ films. Every time I want to understand the troubles of our people in Kosovo and Metohija, I reach for one of Peter Handke’s books,“ said Vucic.
With this order, Serbia shows its gratitude to Peter Handke. Thank you for everything you do for our country and Serbia, the President pointed out.
Expressing gratitude for the order, Handke addressed the audience briefly.
„I have absolutely not been ready to receive such an important medal. I was only told that I would meet with your president, that we would have a cup of coffee, I did not prepare any speech. But that is a reflection of my life, I am often not ready for anything.“
„When I think of Serbia, I always think of the White Angel from Mileseva. I have one copy at home and whenever I think of Serbia I look at that copy which points to an empty tomb, which shows that Jesus resurrected, that the tomb was empty. It always makes me think and contemplate. I always remember Serbia fondly, thank you for this order,“ said Handke.
