Belgrade Metro to start being built in late 2021, from meadow at Makis Field

Minister of Finance of Serbia, Sinisa Mali, has stated that the construction of the Belgrade metro could start at the end of next year, at Makis Field.

Mali talked about the project with the representatives of the companies Power China and Alstom, as well as with ambassadors of China and France, Chen Bo and Jean-Louis Falconi.

They agreed to adopt appropriate legal documents by the end of this year, which would regulate the relations among the participants in the project, and establish the basis for all further activities that would be implemented, the Ministry of Finance announced.

According to the existing agreements, the French will be in charge of electro-mechanics, while the Chinese will deal with the metro construction works.

As it was announced, the French company Egis is currently working on a feasibility study, and in the upcoming days a meeting will be held with their representatives, in order to plan further steps on the project in relation to the dynamics of the study.

They also agreed at the meeting that it was necessary to complete the structure of financing the project as soon as possible, which would involve French and Chinese banks, as well as other international financial institutions.

Egis previously conducted a study in which it was estimated that the construction of the first metro line would cost 1.8 billion euros, and the second line 2.2 billion euros.

The interlocutors agreed that this was an extremely important project for the City of Belgrade, which had been expected for decades, and that it would be an absolute priority in the upcoming period so that construction works could begin as soon as possible, the Ministry of Finance pointed out.

The Egis study predicted that the first line of the Belgrade metro would go from Zeleznik to Mirijevo (the first phase to the Pancevo Bridge) in the length of 21.3 kilometers with 23 stations and the second line from Mirijevo to Zemun, 19.2 kilometers long with 20 stations.
