Beobuild: SERIOUS illogicalities of the plan for Belgrade SUBWAY

An early public insight is currently underway in the building of Belgrade City Administration building until March 6th, regarding development of the general regulation of rail systems in Belgrade, with elements of detailed elaboration for the first phase of the first subway line. With changes that it brings, the new plan for development of the subway system in Belgrade is one of the most controversial in decades-long planning process of Belgrade, the analysis of the expert portal Beobuild evaluates. At the most basic level, it can be said that the subway lines, as mapped in the current Belgrade subway plan, call into question the basic assumptions of every subway system – from the fact that the construction plan ignores transport priorities and primarily develops alternative locations, that routes are bypassing the most populated settlements and destination points thus extending the travel time, to the point that it prevents optimal combination of the system with other means of transport, the portal reports. The biggest problem, as pointed out, is in the priority line, but serious illogicalities exist throughout the entire system. According to analysis, the first line, which would be built from Makis to Ada Huja and subsequently to Mirjevo, passes through non-urbanized areas or just around the perimeter of low-density settlements on almost half of its route. Such changes are justified by the fact that residential sites are foreseen in such locations in the future, which practically means that the priority subway line will be built for speculations with still undeveloped land. Thus, as Beobuild reports, instead of critical points, such as the Prokop Railway Station, the Clinical Centre and Slavija Square, plots that are yet to be built are actually covered. Authors of the analysis therefore point out that early public insight into the plan for development of rail systems in Belgrade is an important step in the planning process and an opportunity for individuals, associations, institutions and the entire interested public to make a decision in relation to the proposed solutions and submit their comments about the plan by March 6th.
