BIZLife list „30 under 30“: Oskar Marko, science
Oskar Marko is a researcher at the Institute for Research and Development of Information Technologies in BioSense Biosystems based in Novi Sad, and a student of PhD studies in electrical engineering and computing.
Oskar deals with machine learning and data analytics. By processing satellite images and data collected by electromagnetic probes, sensors and hyperspectral cameras, he obtains information about the state of crops and soil characteristics, which enables him to assist farmers in making decisions regarding seed selection, quantity and timing of irrigation, and distribution of artificial fertilizers.
Last year, he led the BioSense team that won first place at the Syngenta Crop Challenge, a prestigious competition that brings together hundreds of teams from the world’s biggest universities, such as MIT, Stanford, Beijing University. His winning solution for smart seed selection drastically reduced production risk and increased soybean yields by 10 percent, without any additional investment in machinery, fuel or pesticides, demonstrating that by using machine learning it is possible to increase the efficiency of agricultural production in a sustainable way.
