Expect AN INCRESAE IN PRICE of fruits, with the exception of APPLES

The total yield of fruits this year will be lower by five to eight percent when compared to 2020 due to frosts and bad weather conditions during pollination, said the Professor of the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad, Zoran Keserovic.

He stated with Beta agency that around 1.6 million tons of fruit were produced in 2020 and estimates for this year’s yield will be from 1.5 to 1.53 million tons.

„Following 2013 and 2020, it will be the largest yield in Serbia in the last 20 years,“ said Keserovic.

He added that the selection of location is important for the yield and quality of fruit, not only for individual fruit species, but also for varieties, so that they can achieve the maximum of their genetic potential.

Low temperatures in February and March this year, as he said, damaged apricots and peaches the most.

According to him, 60 to 70 percent of apricots got damaged due to frost, but the yield will be higher than last year, when there was also damage due to frost.

From 30 to 35 percent of peaches, as he said, suffered frost damage when compared to 2020, and low temperatures and poor pollination will reduce the yield of cherries from 15 to 20 percent, 20 percent of sour cherries, 10t to 15 percent of plums, while the damage on pears is 25 up to 30 percent when compared to 2020.

Apples have suffered minimal damage, but a higher yield is expected by around five to ten percent than during last year.

Keserovic estimated that higher prices for almost all types of fruit, except for apples, can be expected this year.
