Finding a job in Serbia for these occupations is hardest

The official data of the National Employment Service (NES) shows that the largest number of the unemployed persons in the register of the NES have been waiting for a job for more than ten years.

The next in terms of numbers are those who wait up to three months, then those who find a job in a maximum of two years.

There are currently just over 320,000 people in the unemployment register. Last year alone, about 50,000 workers lost their jobs. The unemployment rate in the last quarter of 2020 dropped below 10% and amounted to 9.9%, which is almost twice less than in 2015. However, tens of thousands of unemployed people have been waiting for a job for years.

According to the National Employment Service, the profiles in which during 2020 there was a far greater number of persons in the register of the National Employment Service than the number of registered vacancies are, among others – assistant confectioner, assistant typist, grammar school graduate, agricultural plant production technician, food technician and biotechnology technician.

There are several other occupations related to agriculture on the list, such as agricultural machinery operator, fruit and vineyard technician and agricultural plant production technician. Administrative technicians, office assistants, legal technicians and cultural technicians are also in low demand.

Among the occupations for which employers reported a much lower demand compared to the number of unemployed, there are also building technicians, teachers and teaching associates, as well as wood processing technicians and lawyers with the 6th degree of vocational education.

Which occupations are in highest demand?

When it comes to the knowledge and skills that employers are most looking for, the NES says that these include possession of various types of licenses, knowledge of the information and communication technology, as well as foreign language proficiency.

Employers are mostly looking for transferable knowledge and skills in the following occupations: cashiers, drivers of heavy goods vehicles and trucks, bus drivers, drivers of cars, taxis and delivery vehicles, as well as commercial and trade agents.
