Growing hazelnuts for Ferrero – a path to a safe and good income

Novo Radonjic from the company „Novo plus“ says that cultivation of hazelnuts is a very profitable business, but one must wait five years to cover costs, and only in the sixth year one can realize income.

He emphasizes that one needs to dedicate a lot of time during the year to plantations and it is necessary to follow the whole process, from the quality of the land onwards, so that production comes as fast as possible, instead of one waiting for 7 years without a single crop.

The idea to plant hazelnut plantations came in 2015 from colleagues who planted them in the vicinity of Crvenka. At the time they made up a plan for 40 hectares. The seedlings were procured from the company „Agriser“, which is owned by the Italian company Ferrero, and they first planted 15 hectares, and another 25 hectares the following year.

„At the very beginning, a land analysis was done, followed by the dumping of manure, i.e. 100 tons per hectare. We also put artificial fertilizer on it. Then we furrowed and ploughed to 40. We completed planting and immediately installed a drip irrigation system in autumn. This system was immediately operational in order for seedling acceptance to be at 100 percent,“ states Novo.

Hazelnut planation of the company „Novo“ is now in its fifth year and they are currently harvesting hazelnuts for the second time, as they expect a yield of around 20 tons. „Around 800 kilograms per hectare are expected in the old crop, and by the end of the year it remains to be seen. On average, it will be around 500 kilograms per hectare of hazelnuts in the shell „, Novo reveals to us.

They signed an agreement with the company „Ferrero“ and this is the harvest they offer them for purchase, i.e. 75% of the crop if, of course, the price which Ferrero follows on the world stock exchange, suits them.

„They are expanding their plantations, they want to have as many plantations in Serbia as possible, which is good for us, because we have a reliable buyer of hazelnuts in the coming years,“ concludes Novo.
