The decline in the number of public schools and students attending these schools contributed the most to such statistics, while the number of private schools and students attending them increased.

Thus, in the school year 2010/11, there were 500 public high schools in Serbia, which were attended by 281,339 students, and in the school year 2019/20 the number of schools was reduced to 492 and the number of students to 244,182.

When it comes to private schools, there were 39 of them in the school year 2010/11, 4,257 students attended them, while in the school year 2019/20, the number of schools increased to 64, and the number of students to 5,673.

Overall, the largest decline in the number of students was recorded in the region of Southern and Eastern Serbia, where the number of high school students decreased by almost a fifth, more precisely 18.5 percent. As expected, the number dropped the least in Belgrade, by 6.7 percent.

According to the data of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, the students’ interest in this period increased only in the field of electrical engineering, because the number of students in electrical engineering schools increased from 28,009 at the beginning of the decade to 28,888 at the end of the decade.

In all other schools, including grammar schools, there was a decrease in the number of students.
