Inequality in Serbia is among the highest in Europe

A member of the Fiscal Council,Nikola Altiparmakov said that Serbia has higher inequality than the EU average by five percentage points, and almost 15 percentage points higher inequality than Slovakia, which is the country with the lowest inequality.

Altiparmakov said that Slovakia and Serbia have a similar tax system, stating that if we applied the Slovak tax system, which has two times higher non-taxable census compared to ours, inequality in Serbia would be reduced by 1.3 percentage points.

He said that the key culprit for the inequality gap between Serbia and Slovakia is the market income inequality, not tax and social policy.

Economist Gordana Matkovic says that inequality in Serbia is very high when compared to the EU countries and that, according to the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) from 2018, only Lithuania and Bulgaria have higher inequality than our country.

She stated that among the 10 percent of the poorest people in our country, 35 percent of households have no income whatsoever.
