    New items in Serbia’s GDP: PROSTITUTION and DRUG TRADE

    According to the data of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, prostitution participates in the gross domestic product of Serbia with RSD 16 billion, which is around 0.3 percent of GDP.

    Also, according to the same statistics, drug trafficking participates in Serbia’s GDP with almost RSD 17.5 billion, i.e. 0.32 percent of GDP.

    The Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia started with the implementation of the European System of Accounts – ESA 2010 and a data transmission program to Eurostat in 2014, and since then the calculation of GDP has included the non-covered economy and illegal activities as its part.

    If one is to believe the official state statistics, drug trafficking grew by almost 20 percent from 2015 to 2019, but its share in GDP decreased. In the same period, according to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, the prostitution increased by almost 25 percent.

    The largest share in Serbia’s GDP goes to the processing industry with RSD 740 billion (13.7 percent) and wholesale and retail trade, as well as repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles with RSD 616.3 billion (11.4).
