New rules: Digital nomads and small start-ups tax free

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has said she wants Serbia to be an open country where a large number of people from all over the world live and work, and that that is why the Government introduced special measures and a liberal visa employment policy for foreigners in Serbia.

She announced tax relief for „digital nomads“ and the abolition of tax for start-ups with fewer than nine employees in the first year of business. „We want Serbia to be an open country where many people from all over the world live and work, so that people from all over the world would come and create in Serbia. We want Serbia to create opportunities for all,“ Brnabic said at the opening of the international conference „Coworking&Coliving Conference Southeast Europe“ dedicated to the modern concept of doing business.

Speaking about tax reforms in this area, she said those reforms were implemented with the aim of developing digital technologies and innovative industries. „As of 1 January 2020, all digital nomads who reside in Serbia for up to 90 days will be exempted from tax,“ Brnabic said, adding that as of next year start-ups with up to nine employees would not pay taxes in the first year of doing business.

Brnabic also pointed out that special measures had been introduced to attract and support the employment of foreigners or returnees. „We have introduced a liberal visa policy for employment in Serbia, and from next year we are introducing electronic visa application and special start-up visas,“ Brnabic said.
