Serbian doctor PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR in Styria

Natalija Cokic, Chief Physician at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the „Graz 2“ Hospital, was named Person of the Year in the Austrian province of Styria, winning this flattering title among 555 famous people who were candidates in this province.

„Finding yourself and being among the top 2 in Styria doesn’t just happen to a doctor,“ Natalija Cokic stated with Tanjug, as she has been making a career as a doctor in Austria since 1992, when she moved to Graz after graduating from the Medical Faculty in Novi Sad, within the „visiting doctor“ program and has remained until this day in that very same hospital.

She points out that one of the reasons why she was awarded the title of person of the year is that the hospital where she works was the main hospital for COVID patients and she received the largest number of patients, especially during the first wave.

She assumed the position of chief physician right at the beginning of pandemic, and as she says, her patients are her only audience.

Anaesthesia, she notes, gained more importance in the midst of the pandemic, and her work paid off even more than she expected.

„Number 1 is usually either a politician or an athlete or a skier, the people who are most popular, and then suddenly – a doctor, and above all an anesthesiologist,“ she says, adding with a smile that one usually hears about surgeons, but not anesthesiologists.

Talking about her education in Novi Sad, she says that she is proud of that University because the knowledge she acquired in Serbia is no less than the knowledge acquired by students in Austria.

The doctor says that if everyone loves what they are learning and what they are doing – success is guaranteed, and when asked what would make her happy after success she has experienced, she answered that she is only looking forward to the end of pandemic.
