Serbian products without the label of protected geographical origin

There is not a single product from Serbia among 3,000 products with a label of protected geographical origin in the European Union.

That, according to Davide Liberati, Head of the EU Project for Organic Production and Protection of Geographical Origin, could change.

He firmly believes that Serbia has major potential to achieve the EU categorization, since it has a major potential in development, as it already has 44 products with a geographical indication registered at the national level.

The EU market represents a great business opportunity for producers, but it is necessary to harmonize the system and food safety rules, Liberati is of an opinion, as he was also a guest and a speaker at the seminar “Territory, Quality, Food, Health”, on the occasion of recently held Week of Italian Cuisine in Serbia.

By the end of the project we expect at least three Serbian labels of geographical origin to be prepared for registration at the EU level. By developing organic production and quality products in Serbia, farmers can sell national products in the European Union, but also all over the world, to the most attractive markets with which they can achieve high prices for their products.
