Serbian SEROLOGICAL TEST on the coronavirus until the end of April

Serbia will receive its own serological test for the presence of coronavirus antibodies, based on antigens produced in the country, by the end of April, the „Vecernje Novosti“ daily newspaper reports.

According to the newspaper, a prototype of the antigen test should appear at the end of the year, which will be made much more sensitive than the existing ones through further research and thus will be able to detect the coronavirus in the early stage of the disease.

Professors and assistants at the Faculty of Chemistry in Belgrade are currently working on these important projects, funded by the Serbian Science Fund and the United Nations Development Programme, in cooperation with colleagues from the Faculty of Agriculture and the INEP Institute.

Professor Tanja Cirkovic, PhD, from the Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry, says that the registration of the Serbian test with domestic components is expected at the end of April.

According to her, the test for antibodies is already produced by INEP, but with proteins from abroad.

„We will now produce those same proteins in our country and they will not have to be purchased. Once we master the technology for protein production, we will be able to easily adapt to the very changes that occur with mutations,“ says Cirkovic.
