Tax administrators inspect property of 1,000 richest citizens of Serbia

More than 1,000 citizens are currently inspected by the Tax Administration of Serbia, whose property is matched with data on their income, as stipulated by the Law on Determining the Origin of Property and Special Tax, which has begun to be applied.

These are the richest, i.e. those who have acquired property in the previous three years which is about 150,000 euros higher than their income at the time. A comprehensive risk analysis is performed, for which a specialized organizational unit of the Tax Administration is in charge, the Politika daily reports.

The fact that more than 1,000 citizens are being checked, however, does not mean that everyone will be in the process of control. Especially if their reported income corresponds to the value by which the property of a natural person has been increased, the Tax Administration of the Republic of Serbia explains for the Politika daily.

If in the procedure of determining the origin of property and reported income, it is determined that there is a reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed, the necessary information will be submitted to the Ministry of the Interior, Tax Police, Public Prosecutor’s Office and other competent authorities.

Names are „official secret“

Regarding the conclusion that the public has never learned the fate of the rich who illegally acquired property and income in previous years, i.e. whether they were prosecuted, whether their yachts, houses, apartments, hotels were confiscated… they note that the Tax Administration is obliged to act in accordance with Article seven of the Law on Tax Procedure and Tax Administration and to keep as an official secret any document, information or other facts about a taxpayer.

Because of the abovementioned reasons, data on persons who were subject to control, as well as the results of control, were not communicated.
