Virologist Ana Banko: We could talk about the end of the pandemic in 2022

Virologist Ana Banko has said that there is still a much higher chance of the coronavirus spreading and of people becoming infected than the chance of acquiring global collective immunity, at least in the first months since vaccination began, and that we would be able to talk about putting the pandemic under control and ending it in 2022.

Banko told RTS TV that Serbia and all the other countries were still facing a challenge and that this was known when the first vaccine was registered at the end of 2020.

„So, when the vaccine is registered, the challenge is to keep people’s awareness focused on controlling the spread of the virus in the human population,“ Banko said.

According to her, the virus is spreading rapidly, there is a large number of infected, the number of vaccines compared to the total population of the world is low, vaccines are administered in two doses and there is still a much higher chance of people becoming infected than gaining global collective immunity, at least in the first months since vaccination began.

It has been proven in clinical studies that the best immunity is acquired after two doses, at different intervals.

„Referring to experts at the global level, the forecast is that in 2022 we will be able to talk about the end in terms of putting the pandemic under control,“ concluded Ana Banko.
