Women in Serbia earn up to 16% less than men

The Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia and the President of the Coordination Body for Gender Equality, Zorana Mihajlovic, stated that the pay gap between men and women in Serbia averages from 11 to 16 percent in favour of men, Mihajlovic’s office announced.

On the occasion of September 18th – the International Equal Pay Day, Mihajlovic reminded that women in Serbia are twice as engaged in unpaid housework, caring for the household and other family members.

„We did the first economic analysis of unpaid jobs and obtained data that, if economic value were added to those jobs, women would earn 546 euros for their work,“ Mihajlovic pointed out.

She stated that the coronavirus epidemic has further „shed light on how much of a burden women take on – from housekeeping, to working in low-paid areas such as the food and textile industry, social and healthcare services, while there are few women in the highest paid sectors such as the IT industry „.

Mihajlovic also added that the reason for the lower activity of women in the labour market lies in performing these unpaid jobs at home.

„As many as 96 percent of women cite care of family members as the reason for part-time work, compared to four percent of men,“ Mihajlovic concluded.
